Island Fire 30 x 30 oil on canvas
Anne Garton
"Though a living cannot be made at art, art makes life worth living. It makes living, living. It makes starving, living. It makes worry, it makes trouble, it makes a life that would be barren of everything --- living. It brings life to life." John Sloan, American Artist 1871 - 1952

View from Fort Hill, oil on canvas 12 x 36

The view from the top of Fort Hill in Eastham on Cape Cod. I have written an essay on this view (see sidebar) which articulates my feeling for the special qualities of this place, both historically and spiritually. There are walking trails all through this property which belongs to the National Seashore, but I seldom walk it. I like to keep it whole and a little distant, as if it can only hold its power from this perspective.

Two Trees in That Field 18 x 18 oil on board
This is my favorite painting, and it's also the one painting I've ruined. The only place this painting will ever hang is in my living room. In my attempt to frame it myself I drove a nail right through the top. I love the two trees standing in the sun. In the end, I'm glad I'll never sell this painting,
